Bike Art Auction, Art Event Extraordinaire, and Dance Party!

Picture
Calling all bicycle fans:

The Edmonton Bicycle Commuters' Society Artists in Residence would like to invite you to a Bike Art Auction on October 1, 2011 at the space typically known as BikeWorks.

This night will feature bike-related art of all media including sculptures, jewelry, furniture, photographs and art bikes! We are also excited to feature pedal powered music by local DJs all night as well as installations, projections and all-round bicycle wonderment!

Submissions are flowing in and we are still accepting submissions until September 28 (at the very, very latest) so if you have art that you would like to contribute, please contact us (artists@edmontonbikes.ca) or drop something by the shop at 10047-80 avenue, alley entrance.

October 1, 2011

We can't wait to see you all there!

Accessibility notes:

BikeWorks is not a very physically accessible location for those folks who use wheelchairs. There is gravel in the yard which we will be putting plywood down over, but once you're in the shop only a few of the rooms allow access to wheelchairs less than 28" wide.

The washroom is poorly accessible, though perhaps manageable if you're quite agile with your chair, as there is a permanent shelving unit just outside the door which would probably require some delicate manoeuvres to get around. Sigh.

The bar is going to be in the used-parts room, which has a cabinet of old parts blocking the door to all but the most narrow of chairs. We are also opening the upstairs of the shop as a lounge space. At the top of a steep set of stairs.

Most of the auction, however, will be on the main floor, as will be the dance party. So please come and dance and we can chat about how to make spaces in Edmonton more accessible to all.

In terms of economics, $5 suggested donation at the door is just that, a suggested donation. We have  a lot of costs we have to cover, and this is a fundraiser for EBC and the Artists in Residence programming. That said, we recognize that some people engage more with money than others. Everyone is welcome to come and contribute to the space with their presence, and if you would like contribute $5 (or more!)  to help us cover costs and support EBC programming, please do. If for whatever reason you're not feeling the monetary contribution please come and have yourself a time.

We encourage everyone to think about the various ways our presence adds value to a space and to the experiences of people around us.

We are happy to open dialogue about how the choices we make help, discourage, and frame access of experience to different people in different ways. If you'd like to chat about ways we can do this here and in different ways in our lives, let's chat. Maybe not on Saturday, though. I think we'll be a bit busy putting together an amazing art event! See you there!
